Questions and Answers about the Follow-up Study

Q:        How much time will the follow-up study require from me, the research volunteer?

A:        We will be conducting interviews with you that will take approximately 20 minutes each when your child reaches the ages of 3 and 5 years.   At the same time, you will also be asked to complete some assessments of your child.   Assessments can be conducted by the research assistant or a package can be mailed out to you to complete on your own.   These assessments should take about one hour to complete.  So, in total, your time commitment will be approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes when your child is 3 and then again when your child is 5 years of age.

Q:        What assessments will you want me to conduct with my child?

A:        There are some questions for you to answer on a questionnaire that will assist with determining childhood development.   These questions are related to your child’s behaviour and language development.

Q:        Will I incur expenses to participate in the study?

A:        No, if you choose to complete the child assessments on your own, we will send the material to you with a return-stamped envelope.  If you live outside the Saskatoon region, we will also provide you with a toll-free telephone number so you can reach us if you have questions.

Q:        In order to participate, do I have to attend a clinic or research office?

A:        No, while it is an option for you to see a research assistant in our office, as with the Feelings in Pregnancy Study, a research assistant can come to your home if you live in Saskatoon or we can conduct the interviews over the telephone.  When interviews are conducted over the telephone, we will mail a child assessment questionnaire to you for completion within a designated timeframe.

Q:        Will I be compensated for participating in this research project?

A:        We appreciate that this research project will involve a time commitment from you, so we will compensate you $30 for completing the interview and questionnaires when your child turns 3 and 5 years of age.   If you participate in the project both times, you will be compensated for a total of $60.    Funds will be given to you within 4-6 weeks of completing each set of interviews/questionnaires.

Q:        Why are we doing this study?

A:        Pregnancy is often a happy time for women, but it can be a difficult time as well. We are doing this study to learn how pregnant women feel and act, and find out what kind of supports they have during pregnancy and soon after their babies are born. This study will help provide better services for pregnant women. Women who participated were interviewed three times: once in early pregnancy, once in late pregnancy, and once shortly after the birth of your baby. Interviews will not take more than 30-40 minutes each.
